JP House: A Minimalist Residential Flat Inspired by Deconstruction of Books

Unleashing the Beauty of Ink Strokes in a Minimalist Space

Inspired by the large book collection of the client, designer Chengwen Tang conceptualized the JP House as a deconstruction of books. By showcasing the beauty of ink strokes, this residential flat in New Taipei City, Taiwan, articulates key aesthetic values such as virtual, real, loose, and intense, creating a unique and captivating living space.

The JP House stands out with its minimalist approach and its departure from mundane and formal designs. The client's request to break away from conventional ceiling work and concealment of building sprinkler piping and curtain boxes led to the preservation of the original spatial height in the public domain, resulting in an elegant exposed industrial loft style.

The interior of the JP House spans 78 square meters, with an additional balcony of 10.1 square meters. The layout includes two bedrooms, a living room, a dining room, two bathrooms, and a walk-in closet. The design team, led by Chengwen Tang, utilized lotos plaster, Italian pastellone floor, KD painted timber veneer board, frosted glass, and metal as the main building materials.

One of the design challenges was to create a flexible and spacious living area while maintaining simplicity. The placement of the sofa, end-table, and work desk was carefully considered to blur the edges and form a flexible triangular configuration. The TV rack was transformed into a revolving TV post, and a simple rack system replaced traditional cabinet volumes.

The JP House project commenced in October 2018 and was completed in January 2019. The earthy color tones and the use of black dots, lines, and surfaces throughout the minimalist space create a harmonious and visually striking environment. The design has received recognition and was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020.
